President Donald Trump is backing off his threat to slap tariffs on several European countries opposing U.S. control of Greenland, saying he reached “the framework of a future deal” on the Danish territory and Arctic region with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. (The Logic)
Talking point: Earlier Wednesday, Trump told the World Economic Forum that he wanted “immediate negotiations” to acquire Greenland from Denmark, but that he “won’t use force.” Stocks started rising as Trump spoke and again after he posted about the “solution.” (The European Parliament had suspended its approval of a trade deal with the U.S. over his threats.) Trump also said they were discussing the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system. In his own address on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney essentially declared the end of American hegemony. Trump noticed. “Canada lives because of the United States,” he warned. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
