The RCMP have accused Wang Yuesheng of obtaining “trade secrets to benefit the People’s Republic of China, to the detriment of Canada’s economic interests.” (The Logic)

Talking point: Tensions have been rising between China and Canada on the battery minerals front. While the two countries were recently ranked as the world’s top battery suppliers, Canadian authorities have been cracking down on Chinese companies’ battery metals activity. Hydro-Québec is classified as “critical infrastructure and a strategic interest to be protected,” police said in a release. The public utility said Wang, a researcher at the Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage, focused on battery materials but didn’t have information on its “core mission.” CBC reported that the police have accused Wang of publishing academic papers and patents “in connection with Chinese universities” but they believe Wang’s actions were “criminal in nature.” Wang will appear Tuesday at the Longueuil courthouse.
