Talking point: A longtime friend of the prime minister, Wiseman will take on his first diplomatic posting at a crucial time in Canada-U.S. relations as the Liberal government heads into what is expected to be a contentious review of the North American trade pact. The Conservatives and Bloc Québécois both warned Carney against the appointment due to comments Wiseman had made about Quebec as co-founder of the Century Initiative, a non-profit group that has advocated for accelerated population growth through immigration. Wiseman has also chaired the board of AIMCo and was part of an advisory council on economic growth when Bill Morneau was the federal finance minister.
