Talking point: The federal government wants to attract more talent to Canada—the budget included $1.7 billion to lure top researchers to the country and an accelerated visa for top tech talent—but this report suggests it should also be working to keep immigrants who are already here. The institute’s CEO, Daniel Bernhard, said the returns on those public investments are at risk if the people they attract don’t stay. Over the past 25 years, one in five immigrants has left, the report found.
