The ride-hailing platform and the United Food and Commercial Workers jointly urged the Ontario government to keep gig workers from being recognized as employees when the Progressive Conservatives overhauled the province’s labour legislation, The Globe and Mail reported. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: The Tories’ Digital Platform Workers’ Rights Act included measures like a minimum-wage guarantee (while people like Uber drivers and SkipTheDishes deliverers are actively engaged in a job) and a requirement that platforms disclose to workers how performance-rating systems work, but did not give them the suite of rights that full employees have. The UFCW struck a deal with Uber in January to have it represent an estimated 100,000 drivers in Canada; documents released to the Globe under access-to-information law show that afterward, the union jointly argued with Uber that they should have lesser status.
