Talking point: Shaw and Rogers are actively shopping Freedom Mobile in an attempt to address concerns that the $26-billion takeover will be bad for cellphone customers. “Divestiture of Shaw’s assets to a third party will not alleviate the likely substantial prevention or lessening of competition” anyway, the bureau argues, but if Shaw sells Freedom now, the discount provider couldn’t be a factor in any potential resolution. Freedom benefits from being tied into Shaw’s wired network and larger corporate structure, and on its own wouldn’t be a meaningful threat to an enlarged Rogers or the other national cellphone companies, the bureau’s filings say.
