Talking point: Deliverr handles fulfillment for merchants selling via Shopify as well as Amazon, BigCommerce and other platforms, letting brands offer U.S. buyers two-day or next-day delivery. Shopify has been building out its own fulfillment network, and in February signalled it’s moving from a model of working with third-party logistics providers to running its own warehouses and operations. Buying Deliverr would accelerate that shift, much as the September 2019 US$450-million purchase of Waltham, Mass.-based 6 River Systems—still its largest acquisition ever—brought in depot robotics expertise. Shopify ended December 2021 with US$2.5 billion in cash and US$5.3 billion in marketable securities on its balance sheet. Deliverr itself announced a US$250-million Series E round led by Tiger Global at a US$2-billion price tag as recently as November 2021.
