California startup Car IQ, which is backed by RBC Ventures, will partner with BlackBerry to build a digital “wallet” technology that allows vehicles to connect to a bank’s payment network and pay for fuel, tolls, parking and maintenance. (The Logic)
Talking point: BlackBerry and Amazon Web Services have been gunning for app makers to develop universal vehicle software on Ivy, and now they have a taker. A potential upside for BlackBerry Ivy, which will be sold to auto manufacturers, is that auto brands could be drawn to the idea of developing their own services or apps that use the payment system. The companies also said the payment technology will be “highly” secure—despite having access to both “hundreds of vehicle sensors” and connecting to banking payment networks—because each vehicle can be authenticated with a “digital fingerprint.” Ivy’s Car IQ technology is U.S.-only but will launch in the EU and Canada in 2022; BlackBerry has said Ivy will ship next February.
