Talking point: Playment provides data-annotation services, meaning it labels content with descriptive metatags, that supports uses including computer vision. Telus International cited research by MarketsandMarkets estimating the computer vision market will grow to more than $50 billion by 2026. The technology has been used along with artificial intelligence in agriculture, for example, to help identify plant diseases. It’s the second acquisition this year for the Vancouver-based Telus spinout, which has built itself up through M&A. It also closed its purchase of Lionbridge AI—another data-annotation provider. Telus International is the first of three divisions of the telecom expected to go public, breaking the TSX tech sector IPO record in February. Telus Health and Agriculture are expected to follow.
