Talking point: Founded in 2014 by McGill graduates Philip Cutler and Roberto Cipriani, Paper has seen explosive growth over the last COVID-19-addled year, going from supporting 50,000 students to more than one million across North America. The pandemic has been particularly positive for edtech, with Toronto-based Top Hat closing a US$130-million Series E round in February and its CEO Joe Rohrlich anticipating a key turning point when some schools return to in-person instruction this fall. Paper has previously raised funds from the likes of Google Assistant Investment and angel investor network Anges Québec.
