Talking point: British hedge-fund billionaire Christopher Hohn submitted the proposal through his firm Children’s Investment Fund Management, CP’s largest shareholder. It’s part of a broader campaign to compel public companies—which also includes Canadian National Railway—to improve transparency and stem their carbon footprints. Boards and executives typically make every attempt to snuff out this kind of shareholder activism. But CP and CN have shown rare displays of support for the motions. A CP spokesperson told The Logic last week the firm planned to follow Hohn’s recommendations, even if shareholders voted against the proposal. Meanwhile, CN’s management is encouraging investors to vote in favour of a similar resolution when they meet for the firm’s virtual AGM next week.
