Talking point: Technology firms catering to restaurants have launched expanded takeout, pickup and delivering functionality during the pandemic as their clients have been forced to close or half-fill dining rooms. Lightspeed said the new functionality will save clients money on third-party commission fees; restaurants have raised concerns about the size of the cut that apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash and SkipTheDishes take, although they offered some waivers in the outbreak’s early months. TouchBistro, a Toronto-based Lightspeed competitor in the hospitality space, launched its own online ordering system in April, with a similar rationale. In May, Ritual—another Toronto-based scale-up—started offering a website builder in addition to its own branded order-ahead app, citing customers’ desire to hold onto more of their sales.
