Kevin Carmichael joins The Logic as economics columnist and editor-at-large. Read more in this note to staff from managing editor Jordan Timm.

I am delighted to announce that Kevin Carmichael is joining The Logic as economics columnist and editor-at-large.

Kevin is one of Canada’s leading business journalists and preeminent commentators on the economy. He helped build Bloomberg’s Ottawa bureau in the early 2000s, was on the front lines of the global financial crisis later that decade for The Globe and Mail, and won awards for his writing as national business columnist for Financial Post, where he most recently served as editor-in-chief. He has been a Washington, D.C.-based correspondent for both Bloomberg and the Globe.

As a member of staff at The Logic, Kevin will write a twice-weekly column, contribute to The Logic Briefing and play a key role in our growing series of live journalism events. He will help our readers make sense of a volatile economy, and will introduce our journalism to an even wider audience.

This is the most challenging economic environment since the late 2000s, and Canada is facing its most dangerous bout of inflation in 40 years. The phenomenon of cheap money is history. Our readers are facing uncertainty and tough decisions. This is the first downturn many of them have experienced.

That makes our job even more vital. We need to not only tell our readers what’s happening, but also help them understand how macro forces in the economy impact the micro forces in their own companies, careers and lives. It is a moment that demands insightful, independent commentary and analysis. Nobody is better suited to this task than Kevin.

Kevin began his career at The Canadian Press, and has also written for Canadian Business, Maclean’s and the Centre for International Governance Innovation, where he was a senior fellow. At CIGI he drew on his Washington experience to comment on global economics, monetary policy and international affairs, and lived in Mumbai for several years to study the global economy from the vantage point of an emerging market.

He was schooled in journalism at Carleton University and in life on a family farm in New Brunswick’s Upper St. John River Valley, and is now based in Montreal.

His first day will be Oct. 23. Please join me in welcoming him to the team.

Jordan Timm,

Managing editor
