Talking point: The letter, from Pennsylvania-based non-profit Future of Life Institute, decries AI’s potential to “flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth.” Yet the names of several purported signatories, including Bill Gates and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have since disappeared, while others have said they never signed it. Bengio, who recently said AI is potentially “as destructive as nuclear bombs,” did knowingly sign, Mila CEO Valérie Pisano confirmed. The Future of Life Institute seeks to mitigate the risks of AI, biotechnologies and nuclear technology.
