Waymo vehicles will hit Toronto streets in the “coming days” to lay the groundwork to offer driverless taxi rides in 2028, according to the autonomous vehicle company, which is owned by Alphabet and backed by both CPP Investments and Canadian auto-parts firm Magna. (The Logic)
Talking point: Waymo says it has a plan for Toronto’s busy pedestrian and cycling traffic and inclement weather, touting its operations in “snowy cities like Detroit, Denver, and Washington D.C.” and “once-in-100-year snow New Orleans experienced this past winter.” The fleet of electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will drive up to 24 hours a day in parts of the downtown core and waterfront, plus popular shopping districts and neighborhoods across Toronto’s midtown, west and east ends. The vehicles will start off with human drivers inside. Ontario requires that autonomous vehicles be labelled and that companies report accidents within 10 days. Waymo, whose vehicles will film the city streets, said it will comply with Canadian privacy laws.
