Talking point: Walmart filed seven applications in late December 2021 showing its interest in selling a variety of digital goods, including home decor and sporting products. The company declined to comment to CNBC on the specifics of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filings, but said it is “continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences” and consistently tests new ideas, some of which go on to become product or service offerings. Retailers have been flocking to the metaverse, which got a popularity bump after Facebook changed its name to Meta last October. Nike, Adidas and Under Armour have experimented with digital sneakers. Gap recently released digital hoodies. And at least one retail CEO thinks digital drops and virtual stores can help lure in younger shoppers.
