Talking point: This is the latest hit to the world’s second-largest carrier, as tensions between Canada and the U.S. rise over Huawei. The Globe and Mail reported that the U.S. will request the extradition of CFO Meng Wanzhou from Canada, while Canada’s China ambassador has attempted to retract comments suggesting politics would play a role in a potential extradition. Currently, the Canadian government is conducting a security review of 5G technology that could result in a ban of Huawei hardware in its 5G networks. However, Canada’s concerns haven’t extended to its own telecoms; Bell and Telus sent internal memos defending Huawei smartphones and equipment— the two telecoms have reportedly been using Huawei hardware to build fibre-optic networks for years.
