Talking point: The OPSEU, which represents around 15,000 professors, instructors, counsellors and librarians, last went on strike in 2017—a dispute that public officials resolved through back-to-work legislation. The latest negotiation has been ongoing for the last six months. On Monday, the government’s bargaining agent called the strike threat “completely unnecessary” and said the union’s demands could cost more than $1 billion. Ravi Ramkissoonsingh, chair of OPSEU’s bargaining team, told The Globe and Mail in an interview that discussions between the union and government remain “very far apart.”
