Talking point: While Canada is celebrated as a hub for AI talent, the country lags behind in artificial-intelligence patents, an important step in commercializing and profiting from invention. As The Logic reported in December 2018, Canada is the only jurisdiction among the top 10 by AI patents filed to see a decrease in the number of patents applied for between 2016 and 2018. In a Cantech Investment Conference keynote covered by The Logic this week, former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie noted that while the government spends taxpayer dollars on AI, a lot of that goes to foreign firms based in Canada.
