Talking point: U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai said the tariffs are suspended in the hope that the ongoing negotiations led by the OECD and G20 over the taxation of multinational firms can reach an agreement. Canada’s digital-services tax (DST) is due to take effect next year. Tai expressed concern about the measure in a meeting with International Trade Minister Mary Ng last month, but did not threaten retaliatory duties, Ng’s office told The Logic at the time. The USTR has yet to initiate a Section 301 investigation of Canada’s DST, the precursor to today’s tariffs on the six countries. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has called for an agreement in the OECD- and G20-led process “by July,” and on Wednesday told reporters that “a deal is within reach.”
