Talking point: The Biden administration first floated the idea of barring Chinese connected car technology from entering the U.S. back in February. On Monday, the department said hackers could gain access to Chinese- or Russian-made technologies and use them to, for example, “record detailed information about American infrastructure” through vehicles’ cameras and sensors. Those security risks have intensified as manufacturers make vehicles increasingly connected and autonomous, the department warned. Software prohibitions would take effect for 2027 vehicle models, while those on hardware would come into effect for 2030.
