Talking point: Last week, Trump’s government announced it would take a 10 per cent stake in Trilogy Metals as part of a US$35.6-million deal to develop critical minerals exploration in Alaska, with options to purchase another 7.5 per cent. The U.S. also acquired a five per cent interest in Lithium Americas, which is developing one of the world’s largest lithium mines in Nevada. Hodgson showed no sign that Canada plans to intervene on national security grounds, emphasizing that the companies’ assets are U.S.-based, and calling the U.S. an “ally.” Canada put limits on foreign-owned investment in critical minerals in 2022, and ordered three Chinese companies to divest from Canadian critical minerals firms after a national security review that year.
