Talking point: The regulator has now been investigating Facebook for over a year, in an attempt to determine if it’s used its dominant market position to stifle competition. It’s the second major tech company to come under scrutiny from U.S. officials: the Justice Department is mere weeks away from filing an antitrust lawsuit against Alphabet’s Google. In a Tuesday hearing organized by a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary panel, U.S. senators called Google a “monopoly upon a monopoly,” alluding to the scale of its business that encompasses platforms like YouTube and Gmail. It is still unclear what the FTC’s Facebook suit will consist of if it goes through, beyond a general probe into whether it fairly acquired past competitors like Instagram and WhatsApp. In July, the CEOs of Facebook, Alphabet, Amazon and Amazon testified at a U.S. antitrust hearing, the result of the House Judiciary subcommittee’s 13 months and millions of documents’ worth of investigation, which will no doubt come in handy should the FTC decide to bring a case against Facebook.
