Talking point: Founded in 2023, Awendio Solaris says it is “building North America’s largest giga-scale cell and module factories” in part through public-private partnerships. It says it will each year produce solar equipment that can generate up to 2,500 megawatts in the Montreal facility’s first phase, with hopes of scaling up to double that—nearly as much as Hydro-Québec’s Churchill Falls generating station. Three Quebec First Nations are partnering with Awendio Solaris, and will invest in the project, but the company is still working to line up other financing. It also hasn’t yet secured a power supply for the facility from Hydro-Québec.
