Talking point: Amazon’s plan to sell Echos at cost—and sometimes even a loss—to gain market share appears to be paying off. In 2018, Amazon had 71.9 per cent of the market but some of that was eaten away by Sonos One, which uses Amazon’s Alexa voice-activated technology. Amazon’s long-term plan is to have the technology underpinning as many of the eight trillion voice assistant devices expected to be in use by 2023.
