Talking point: Viggle app users can add actions or motions to characters using reference videos or text instructions. The animation comes from the startup’s own video-generation model, JST-1. The technology went viral in April, when a user superimposed Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker character on a video of the rapper Lil Yachty dancing out onto a festival stage. Viggle CEO Hang Chu worked on a doctorate in computer vision at the University of Toronto, under Waabi CEO Raquel Urtasun and Nvidia executive Sanja Fidler. Generative AI can be an expensive business—firms need a lot of data and computing power to train their models. Viggle is the second visuals-focused Toronto startup that Andreessen Horowitz and Two Small Fish have jointly backed; the other, Ideogram, raised a US$80-million Series A in February.
