The hospital has hired Dr. Anna Goldenberg to be its first chair in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence. Goldenberg will work with Peter Laussen, the hospital’s chief of critical care, on artificial-intelligence research in healthcare, using the trillions of data points collected from SickKids’ intensive care unit to develop applications like predicting cardiac arrests five minutes before the heart stops beating. Talking point: Goldenberg’s new job is the first position of its kind at a Canadian children’s hospital. Healthcare has traditionally been a difficult sector in which to innovate—startups often have a hard time  finding early-adopters to partner with and face funding gaps. With a robust data set and an institution ready to test applications, SickKids—flanked by institutions like the AI-focused Vector Institute, University of Toronto and MaRS—could be another key research and innovation centre for healthcare tech innovation in the city.
