TechTO and San Francisco-based sf.citi put forward $10,000 in their respective cities to kickstart a charity campaign for their local tech communities. The goal is to raise $100,000. If the Raptors win, all pledges go to Canada Learning Code, which develops coding workshops for women, youth and underrepresented groups. A Warriors win will see all pledges go to Circle the Schools, which has local tech employees volunteer to increase digital literacy for students. TechTO has raised nearly $30,000 at the time of publication. (BetaKit)
Talking point: This isn’t the first time the Toronto tech community has rallied around an ambitious charity goal that encourages tech investments and education. One of the most high-profile campaigns was in2017, which saw several tech leaders—including Jodi Kovitz, CEO of Move the Dial, and Salim Teja, former MaRS venture services vice-president—kick off the Tech4SickKids campaign to raise $25 million for the hospital. At the time the campaign launched, Amar Varma, founder of Autonomic, pledged $250,000 to the cause. The goal was to help the hospital establish its first chair of biomedical informatics and AI and construct a new emergency suite.
