The short-video app TikTok, as well as its Chinese version Douyin, is on track to be the fourth most-downloaded non-gaming app on Google’s and Apple’s app stores, according to a report from analytics firm App Annie. Only Facebook, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are set to be downloaded more. (Technode)
Talking point: TikTok parent company ByteDance is facing a national security investigation in the U.S. and battling claims from employees that it censors content on behalf of China. The firm is focused on expanding in overseas markets including the U.S., Japan and India as it faces growing competition at home. Today’s report is a positive sign for those ambitions, as it does not include downloads from third-party Android stores in China. The company is also building out a Canadian division and looking for a “country head” to lead operations here.
