Talking point: Telus CTO Ibrahim Gedeon said the company is upgrading its wireless equipment in Canada to non-Huawei gear for 5G, and a senior Telus official said telecoms expect the federal cabinet will bar Huawei from Canada’s 5G network. Ottawa has not yet made a decision, but some said that inaction came down to hoping companies would choose other vendors due to delays—a strategy that has seemingly worked with the Big Three telecoms. As my colleague Catherine reported recently, the decision on whether or not to ban Huawei from Canada’s 5G networks puts Canada in the awkward position of choosing a side between the U.S.—which effectively banned Huawei with an executive order from President Donald Trump in May 2019—and China.
