Talking point: Preliminary results of a post-budget survey by Kitchener, Ont.-based Communitech, Toronto-based MaRS and Invest Ottawa show that the vast majority of tech leaders polled believed innovation would suffer as a result of the tax change, The Globe and Mail reported. The tech hubs, however, have abstained from a campaign against the tax increase, which leaders in the business and tech community interpret as support for the tax. Kurts McBride, CEO of Kitchener-based Miovision Technologies said it was “disappointing” to see Communitech remain silent on the change in its post-budget statement, while people in the community the organization represents are “beside themselves” about the tax hike. Shopify chief operating officer Kaz Nejatian said he wasn’t surprised MaRS supports “anti-tech taxes,” saying the organization “continually seeks more government handouts” without providing value to startups. MaRS CEO Alison Nankivell was not immediately available to respond to The Logic’s request for comment.
