Talking point: The company aims to make plant-based food taste and feel better by finding and testing proteins. In May, it announced a partnership with Ontario’s University of Guelph and Coasun, a Guelph-based company that makes a baking-margarine alternative. The partnership aims to help Motif make plant-based cheese melt and stretch better, among other objectives. This is Wittington’s first investment in the future-of-food vertical, tweeted managing partner Jim Orlando. The firm is affiliated with the holding company of the Weston family, which owns Loblaw, and its investments hint at the future of Canada’s largest grocery retailer.
