The automaker informed union members on Wednesday that it is seriously considering the closure and sale of its Brampton, Ont., assembly plant west of Toronto, Unifor national president Lana Payne said in a press conference. Payne, whose union is in the middle of collective bargaining with General Motors and will next begin talks with Stellantis, said the automaker’s comments were not a formal notification to workers under the agreement. Talking point: The plant’s future has been up in the air since late last year, when Stellantis announced it would make Jeeps in Illinois, instead of Ontario, as President Donald Trump used tariffs to put pressure on automakers to build in the U.S. The plant’s 3,000 workers have been laid off since early 2024, and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has said Stellantis’s decision to move Jeep production means it has defaulted on its government funding contract. Earlier this year, the automaker was reportedly considering using the plant to assemble electric vehicle “kits” made by China-based automakers. In an emailed statement on Friday, spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin said it had nothing to announce ahead of its negotiations with Unifor, and it is still focused on “finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for Brampton Assembly.”
