The Chrysler parent company said Tuesday it will invest US$13 billion over four years to expand its U.S. manufacturing capacity. It includes US$600 million to remodel a plant in Illinois to make the Jeep Cherokee and Compass—instead of producing the latter in Brampton, Ont. (The Logic)
Talking point: Stellantis said it has a plan for the Brampton plant’s future, subject to its discussions with the Canadian government, but did not disclose any specifics about the production or employment plans there. Stellantis closed the plant northwest of Toronto in early 2024 to retool the facility to produce the Compass, laying off about 3,000 employees at the time. Stellantis paused that retooling in February amid President Donald Trump’s threat of auto tariffs. He slapped 25 per cent duties on imported autos in April. Ottawa retaliated with counter-tariffs, but granted a carve-out for companies making vehicles in Canada that stuck with production and planned investments. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Nov. 4 federal budget will include incentives to entice companies like Stellantis to keep jobs in Brampton.
