The Canadian subsidiary of Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs will wind down its cold-rolled and coated steel operations at the Hamilton Works plant beginning Oct. 9. (CBC News, The Logic)
Talking point: In a memo to customers on Monday, Stelco said the market for those products has shrunk since U.S. President Donald Trump restored Section 232 tariffs on Canadian steel in March 2025, and extended them to hundreds of downstream products. Stelco also said steel imports into Canada remain a problem despite Ottawa’s efforts to curtail the dumping of cheap steel, including from China. United Steelworkers Local 1005 estimates Stelco will lay off about 350 workers. In a statement to The Logic, Cleveland-Cliffs spokesperson Patricia Persico said Stelco expects to keep producing the same tonnage of steel as it concentrates production at its Ontario Lake Erie Works facility, where the company expects many of the affected workers to find new jobs.
