The San Francisco-based fintech is rolling out Square Card to Canadian businesses, allowing them to access their earnings immediately through a business-expense card, rather than waiting until the next day. For a fee, merchants will also be able to transfer funds instantly to an external bank account. (The Logic)
Talking point: Christina Riechers, head of product for Square Banking, said in an interview that the product is meant to ease cash flow issues for its Canadian merchants. “We have seen cash flow as this perennial challenge that small-business owners face,” Riechers said. “By bringing Square Card to Canada, we’re hoping to reduce that gap between when a seller gets their money and when they can start using it.” It’s Square’s second product launch in Canada this month, after the company introduced Square Register, a premium point-of-sale terminal. Square said this summer that it was growing its sales team’s headcount and looking to expand its product offerings in Canada as it increases its focus on the market.
