Talking point: The launch of Square Register comes as the payments and point-of-sale company looks to expand its slate of product offerings in Canada. “Square Register is one of the core pieces of our ecosystem for larger sellers,” said Michael MacLennan, head of product for Square Hardware, in an interview with The Logic. “It was really important for us to get this product into Canada.” In contrast to Square’s standard terminal, the register has two touchscreens, one each for the buyer and seller. The extra screen allows retailers to customize the terminal’s appearance to fit their branding, and also provides more space for vendors to promote things like loyalty programs, which Square also facilitates. The screens can also be placed up to two metres apart, fitting more store configurations—and catering to vendors who wish to social distance, MacLennan said.
