Warner Music Group has filed an injunction in India to block Spotify’s access to songs from its publishing division, which has rights to more than one million tracks. Spotify has accused Warner of “abusive behaviour” that would harm “many non-Warner artists, labels and publishers.” (Variety)
Talking point: The injunction puts a hurdle in Spotify’s long-awaited launch in the world’s second-most populous country; it’s already been postponed at least twice. Major labels control a much smaller share of the market in India than in North America and Europe—Warner has less than five per cent. Spotify said that is why the company is holding out. The streaming platform said it’s closed licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music. “WCM remains the lone hold-out needed for a Spotify launch in India,” said a Spotify spokesperson.
