The commerce company’s CEO will compete at the famous French endurance race in a Shopify-liveried, LMP2-class car set up by TDS Racing, which manages racing programs for clients. He’ll trade shifts, which can run up to four hours, with professional drivers Mathias Beche and Kevin Estre. (The Logic)
Talking point: Lütke has been working up to Le Mans for some time; in a post, he called it “bucket list stuff.” Following the lead of David Heinemeier Hansson—the CTO of tech firm 37signals and Shopify board member popularly known as DHH—he’s competed in several races under the International Motor Sports Association. The two sometimes share a car, as at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January, where Beche was also on the team. DHH has himself raced Le Mans many times. The race is notoriously gruelling, requiring drivers to bank sleep in the lead up and then go mostly without it during the running. It’s also iconic, which is why it’s the centrepiece of films like the Christian Bale-Matt Damon two-hander Ford v Ferrari, Steve McQueen’s Le Mans and underrated IP conversion Gran Turismo.
