The Ottawa e-commerce platform is partnering with Meta to let users of its new AI assistant, Muse, shop from Shopify merchants and complete purchases using Shop Pay. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke said the partnership will create an “easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse.” (The Logic)
Talking point: Shopify’s partnership with Muse sets it apart from Amazon, which has blocked the AI assistant from shopping on its platform, saying it violates the company’s terms of use. Amazon has also sued Perplexity for having agentic shoppers on its site, winning a preliminary injunction in the U.S. in March to bar the AI assistants. Deutsche Bank analysts said in a note, however, that Shopify’s deal with Muse could ease concerns that AI shopping agents could cut Shopify out of online purchases. Instead, it suggests AI companies may rely on Shopify’s merchant network, product listings and payment tools to complete sales. Shopify’s stock was up 7.1 per cent at Tuesday market close.
