Shopify merchants will be charged the fee in addition to ones Shopify already takes on sales, including payment processing, starting Jan. 26 when the company starts to make its merchants’ products available for sale through checkouts in AI apps. (The Information)
Talking point: Shopify told The Information there will be no additional fee for Google and Microsoft’s chatbot checkouts at this time and that merchants will have to opt in to have their products available in those that do charge a fee. Agentic commerce has become increasingly important to both the tech firms building the platforms where the sales happen and retailers who feel the need to keep up with where consumers are shopping. Shopify announced earlier this month it is launching a new system to help AI agents shop online.
