Talking point: Co-founders Marvin Purtorab and Andy Toulis started Convergence in April, after both previously working on the AI teams of Shopify and fellow Canadian tech firm Cohere. The startup’s first product is an AI assistant called Proxy, to which users can delegate busywork like making appointments, posting content on social media, or updating an online store. Many tech firms are now offering AI “agents”—which unlike chatbots that typically provide answers to questions—can go out and accomplish tasks. Most are focusing on business clients, whose staff can use the assistants for office work like research or customer service. Convergence is promising its general-purpose agent will learn tasks of all kinds, managing both users’ personal calendars and professional inboxes.
