Talking point: Shopify’s staff stock grants and options have become less lucrative—and therefore, motivating—as the commerce platform’s share price has dropped significantly over the last six months. Executives have not signalled the firm will raise salaries to compensate, as other tech firms have done in similar circumstances. “Money alone should not be the only motivator for someone choosing to work at Shopify,” a spokesperson told The Information. Post-IPO, the firm had a tradition that workers spotted checking the stock price had to buy Timbits—a kind of Canadian donut-hole delicacy, for international readers—for their team. On a February earnings call, CEO Tobi Lütke touted the importance of opportunities for career growth in attracting talent. But he also insisted “Shopify is amongst the best-paying companies in the world” in terms of both salary and stock.
