The Ottawa-based commerce company wants to work with the Delaware-based connector of digital wallets and apps “to help push commerce into the Web3 era,” said Hooman Mehranvar, Shopify’s corporate development lead, in a statement. Talking point: WalletConnect, which closed a US$11-million Series A in March and US$1.25-million seed round in 2021, said it is working on developing push notifications and wallet-to-wallet messaging. It will use its latest funds and leverage strategic partners who participated in the round to create what it called a “fully decentralized WalletConnect Network.” It’s not the first time Shopify has made a Web3 bet. In August, it backed Thirdweb’s US$24-million Series A and made a strategic investment in music NFT app Single in July.
