Talking point: Tuesday’s announcement is the second public carbon-capture deal from Shopify’s $5 million-a-year Sustainability Fund set up in September 2019; nearly a quarter of the money allocated so far has gone to direct air capture. The e-commerce giant is looking to generate demand for the technology and drive down prices by helping providers scale, director Stacy Kauk said in a September 2020 blog post. Carbon Engineering said Shopify is the marquee first customer for its new removal service, which allows companies to pay to pull tonnes of carbon out of the air toward their net-zero targets, instead of paying for their own facilities. In Canada, the company has called for a tax credit for capture, while the Alberta government wants $30 billion in funding for such projects.
