Black was the head of Uber Eats’ American and Canadian divisions. Under his tenure—which started with him acting as Uber Canada general manager in 2014—Uber became legal in Toronto by 2016, and he launched its Uber Eats offering in the city. Black will work from Shopify’s Toronto office. (BetaKit)
Talking point: Shopify has been aggressively expanding into “real-world” retail recently, and Black’s experience getting independent restaurants to sell online with UberEats could transfer over to the many small merchants at the e-commerce company. Shopify’s POS and chip and card readers for bricks-and-mortar merchants have been core to its entry into physical retail, and it’s furthered its reach in this area with a Los Angeles store dedicated to supporting merchants using the Shopify platform.
