Sharma and Kanwar have bought a majority stake in the Toronto-based publication, which reports on the Canadian tech ecosystem, through their family office, Good Future. Douglas Soltys, the editor-in-chief and previously BetaKit’s sole shareholder, will retain a minority stake in the company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. (The Logic)
Talking point: Under Good Future’s ownership, BetaKit will establish an editorial advisory board. Kanwar, who was Shopify’s head of product acceleration until he left at the end of July, will serve as chair of BetaKit’s board of directors and as interim CEO, and Soltys will run editorial. Soltys told The Logic the company plans to grow its team, including adding a newsletter editor, senior editor and CEO/general manager. “We see this as a unique opportunity to help the publication reach its full potential,” Sharma and Kanwar, who are married, said in an emailed statement. Soltys, who took over BetaKit in 2016, said the acquisition will ensure the company is “‘default alive’ for decades to come.”
