Talking point: Freedom’s ability to add customers comes despite Telus, Rogers and Bell all introducing unlimited data plans, something Freedom has long offered. The firm’s growth is partially due to a steady stream of expansions in recent months. In August, for example, it launched in eight cities across Alberta and B.C., regions Telus typically dominates. Bell and Rogers are also fighting smaller carriers in court, seeking to overturn a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to slash the prices small firms need to pay large ones for internet. London, Ont.-based Start.ca cited that decision for Thursday’s announcement it would lower prices or increasing speeds at no cost for over 14,000 customers. TekSavvy and Distributel have also made similar cuts.
