New CTO Ron McKenzie had been president of the Rogers for Business unit for just over a year, after previously being the telco’s senior vice-president for technical operations. He replaces Jorge Fernandes, who’d had the job since February 2018. In an email, Rogers spokesperson Nilani Logeswaran said the change is immediate but did not answer questions about whether he resigned or was fired, or precisely what triggered the move. (The Logic)

Talking point: Fernandes’s stint included two major failures of the Rogers network. The July 8 and 9 outage, which CEO Tony Staffieri called “unacceptable,” shut down its internet and wireless services; the previous failure in April 2021 affected mobile service. The company attributed each to faulty software updates. Integrating Shaw Communications’s systems will be a top priority if regulators let Rogers’s $26-billion acquisition of its Calgary-based rival go ahead; McKenzie, Fernandes’s replacement, previously worked at Shaw Communications for more than 10 years, including as chief operating officer.
