Talking point: McNamee isn’t your typical Big Tech antagonist. He was an early investor in both Facebook and Google, but now describes both companies as monopolies misusing people’s data. He also said Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are worse than Zuckerberg when it comes to data privacy. He urged Canadians to ban targeted advertising in the run-up to the 2019 federal election, and to oppose Sidewalk Labs’ smart-city development. But McNamee did express optimism that ongoing regulatory efforts in the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Australia will help reign in Big Tech—and urged Canadian regulators to do more.
